Shirley Stewart Burns, Ph.D., is a proud native daughter of Matheny, Wyoming County in the heart of the southern West Virginia coalfields.  The daughter of an underground UMWA coal miner, Shirley has a vested interest in the histories and the future of the unique culture of the Appalachian coalfields, and her love of this region continues to inspire her in her various works.
